The Hollywood Bowl traces its origins to 1919, when the Theatre Arts Alliance purchased a 59-acre site in Bolton Canyon for $47,500. Originally known as “Daisy Dell,” the area was a shaded picnic spot prized for its natural amphitheater shape and strong acoustics. It was especially favored by the founders, including William and H. Ellis Reed, who recognized its potential as an outdoor performance venue. The Hollywood Bowl officially opened on July 11, 1922, beginning modestly with nothing more than a simple wooden platform and a canvas top.
The Pool Circle has a bit of fascinating history behind its name. Those coveted front-and-center seats where today’s well-heeled guests sit once occupied an actual reflecting pool that separated performers from the audience. The space quite literally held water, creating a dramatic visual barrier between the stage and the crowd. In 1972, the roughly 100,000 gallons were drained, and the area was converted into seating. The name stuck, even though the water did not, leaving behind one of the Hollywood Bowl’s most interesting historical footnotes.
