The Wednesday Jazz Plus series has been restructured, now offered as a three-concert package instead of four. What was previously Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 (JZ1 and JZ2) is now Wednesday 1 and Wednesday 2 (WE1 and WE2), still promoted as featuring some of the most talented luminaries of jazz and beyond, under the guidance of Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock.
Some may wonder if the popularity of the Wednesday series has softened. The Bowl has added more mainstream and often more expensive lease events, which may shift attention away from midweek performances.
In recent seasons, the programming has also moved beyond traditional jazz. The series now features more global and genre-blending artists. Last year’s Rhiannon Giddens performance, which explored the evolution of folk music, was a perfect example. The show was exceptional.
Regardless of genre, weekday concerts offer a relaxed and intimate energy. They create a genuine sense of community that makes the experience uniquely special.
