The Los Angeles Philharmonic has officially named Daniel Harding as its next Music Director, ending years of speculation over who would eventually succeed Gustavo Dudamel. Harding will begin his tenure with the LA Phil during the 2027/28 season under an initial six-year contract.
The appointment marks a major moment for both the orchestra and the city of Los Angeles. Since Dudamel announced his planned departure to lead the New York Philharmonic, classical music fans have closely watched the search for the next leader of one of the world’s most influential orchestras.
Now, the LA Phil has turned to one of Europe’s most respected conductors.
Who Is Daniel Harding?
Daniel Harding, 50, is a British conductor known for his work with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Harding’s career began unusually early. As a teenager, he worked with legendary conductor Simon Rattle and later assisted Claudio Abbado. He made his American conducting debut with the LA Phil in 1997 at just 21 years old.
Beyond music, Harding is also known for maintaining a second career as a licensed commercial airline pilot for Air France — one of the more unique biographies in the classical music world.
What This Means for the Hollywood Bowl
While much of the LA Phil’s season takes place at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Music Director also plays a major role at the Hollywood Bowl during the summer season.
According to the LA Phil, Harding will lead programming at both Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl while also helping guide commissioning projects, international collaborations, and youth music initiatives including YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles).
For Hollywood Bowl audiences, the appointment could signal a continuation of the LA Phil’s modern and globally minded programming style established during the Dudamel era.
Following Gustavo Dudamel
Replacing Gustavo Dudamel was never going to be simple. Since taking over in 2009, Dudamel helped transform the LA Phil into one of the most internationally recognized orchestras in the world. Under his leadership, the orchestra expanded its educational programs, increased contemporary commissions, and strengthened the Hollywood Bowl’s profile as a destination for both classical and crossover performances.
Still, many within the classical music community view Harding as a strong artistic choice.
The LA Phil stated that Harding was the “overwhelming choice” following feedback from musicians, board members, and staff.
A New Era for the LA Phil
Harding’s first season will reportedly include eight weeks of programming before expanding in future years.
His arrival also continues the LA Phil’s tradition of selecting conductors known for innovation, adventurous programming, and international perspectives. From Esa-Pekka Salonen to Gustavo Dudamel, the orchestra has consistently embraced artistic leaders willing to push beyond traditional concert expectations.
That philosophy appears likely to continue under Daniel Harding.
For Hollywood Bowl fans, the appointment adds another intriguing chapter to the future of summer concerts in Los Angeles.
